Around the World in 25 Days

Staying in the moment keeps me focused and concentrated and fully present with the task at hand. And that works with small, daily things as well as major events in my life.

Last fall, my community yoga studio announced a yoga retreat in Japan scheduled for April. And I thought, “oh wow, I’ve always wanted to go to Japan, and what a great way to do that!” So I signed up for the retreat.

Shortly after, my friend Sarah sent me a message inviting me to her wedding in Botswana, Africa. The date fell a few days after the end of the yoga retreat.Checking in with myself, it was an immediate and strong Yes for me to attend, and so I added a trip to Botswana a few days after the yoga retreat was scheduled to end.

I figured I could fill the time in between touring Tokyo.

And then it occurred to me that I do in fact have some friends in Cape Town, South Africa; some of whom I’ve met in the past, and one who I’ve never actually met in person, only over Zoom. And I thought, “wow, Cape Town is only a short flight from where I’ll be in Botswana, so I might as well pop down there too and visit!”

Before you knew it, I had planned an around the world trip.

I didn’t set out to travel the world. I set out to be present for each opportunity. As I focused on each one, sinking deeply into the experience, this entire beautiful path unfolded before me.

What a gorgeous reminder that I can’t see the entirety of my life’s path. But how it unfolds with ease as I focus on each moment, with my full attention and presence.

Padi padi. One step at a time.
